I've had afternoon tea twice here so far and enjoyed both. One was the spring themed, and the other was the normal one they offer. I have also been for normal food and enjoyed eating here every time. It is small and can get a little tight spaced when it's busy but not really an issue unless you're trying to move about

We love this place!
Been many times for breakfast, lunch and recently an afternoon tea, which was amazing.
'Great vibe, delicious homecooked food, including the chips!
As always the staff provide an excellent service.
Would highly recommend.

I’d like to give a huge thank you to the staff that turned my husband and I, plus our two well behaved dogs, away when it was -5c today. If you haven’t we’d of never discovered a few doors down the wonderful refuge of the Rise Artisan Bakehouse. We were made very welcome there in unpretentious warm surroundings. With views over the town. It was so delightful we didn’t just stay for coffee but had lunch there too.
We therefore recommend that you continue to turn customers away because you don’t like the look of their well behaved dogs and send them down to the Rise as they will be most welcome there instead.

The food is simple yet nice.

The cafe was quite busy and chatty.

It was warm downstairs, cold upstairs.

The portions are small. We weren't full by any means after our lunch, although we spent nearly £30 on it.

One waitress was warm and friendly,
another bordered on rude, unfortunately.

Don't think we'd return.

Clarendons is a little gem in Barnard Castle
The staff are very welcoming and always try to accommodate everyone - there are two designated tables for dog owners, comfortable, cosy seating, great food and lovely choice of teas, good coffee too! We always enjoy our visits here ~ thankyou !

First time there. Grace looked after us and she was lovely. Polite, helpful and attentive. Good social distancing and good working practices. Asked for breakfast tea and came in a large pot with extra hot water. It was Taylor's tea, not a tea bag and was great. Had jacket potato with prawns. Good size potato and well cooked. The wife had avacado and prawns and again delicious. Then followed with a slice of carrot cake which the wife said was the best she had ever tasted. I had a fruit scone and that was a good size and very tasty. Will definitely be going back. All the staff seemed very professional and polite.

What a disappointment.
We got seated easily and the waitress who took our order was friendly and prompt, so that was a good start. But when our drinks arrived, the waitress (a different one) plonked the tray on our table, said, “Here’s your drinks.” and walked off.
The espresso-based coffees were very poor: the latte was like hot milk and the flat white was like filter coffee with a dash of foamed hot milk.
The tea was served in a stainless steel pot, the lid of which was very hot and too tightly-fitting to open, so it was impossible to mash the tea to get it strong enough.
There’s only one (unisex) toilet, so we ended up using the public toilets out on the main street, rather than queuing for ages in a standing area that means you’re blocking access to the kitchen.
And while we were having our drinks a group of 8 people arrived with a prior reservation which none of the staff knew anything about.
